Observers will help promote and implement the use of the Standards. There will be 25 to 30 Observers. Observers attended the Summit to:

• Learn about the project and the Standards first hand
• Learn about window preservation work by watching demonstrations
• Meet the key people involved in the project
• Develop strategies for bringing the Standards to the people back home who need them most

Observers can review and comment on the drafts of the standards here at the website, especially in the Marketing and Summit sections of the Forum. Observers might be:

• Writers, journalists or publishers
• Staff and officials from government agencies or non-profit organizations at any level from local, state or national
• Anyone with an interest in window preservation and skills in marketing and promotion

Observers understand that comments, ideas and images they submit to the Collaborative may appear at the website and be used in the drafts and final version of the Standards.

Observers are invited by the Founders to participate.

Nathalie is the Partner in the Field representative for the Columbus Landmarks Foundation/National Trust for Historic Preservation. Part of her responsibilities include organizing and conducting “how to” workshops for home owners. Specifically, Landmarks partners with the United Way of Central Ohio, marketing our workshops in their priority low income neighborhoods. They advocate the repair and re-use of historic windows and promote the use of storm windows as an appropriate choice for weatherization improvement. She is expecting her attendance at the Summit to further her knowledge of window repair and weatherization issues, enabling her to provide better information for home owners, who are bombarded with advertisements by new window manufacturers. Columbus Landmarks is a partner organization with Heritage Ohio and she is a former employee of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office. She anticipate sharing information learned at the Summit with her network of Ohio contacts, including Ohio’s other local Partner in the Field representatives.

Kathy Morgan
Kathy is the Historic Preservation Planner for the City of Wichita. She works with residential, commercial and institutional rehabilitation projects. Her office provides training seminars for contractors, building inspectors, homeowners, facilities managers and real estate agents. She is working to bring preservation, energy efficiency and sustainability together in Kansas.

My name is Joy and I am the Restoration Specialist for the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office. In the fall of 2002, I signed up for 3 day wood window repair workshop in New Hampshire which John Leeke was going to teach. In the end, John was not available so 2 other local gentlemen taught the workshop. I made a point of meeting John Leeke at an APT conference in Maine back in 2003. From there we set up wood window preservation workshops across the state of South Dakota in September of 2004 and that really jump started my passion for historic windows of every type. I even wrote a National Trust grant to have two wood window repair workshops in South Dakota in the summer/fall 2005. Unfortunately I left the South Dakota SHPO to go back to Oregon's SHPO where I had interned as a graduate student and missed these workshops. Since then, John and I have kept in touch over the years as I tried to figure out how to get him to the other coast for another set of workshops. When he told me that he had a workshop set up in Idaho, I knew that was my chance to get John to conduct a workshop in Eastern Oregon, just 8 hours away. We ended up having the day long workshop in La Grande, OR the first weekend of March 2011 and it was a great success! When John told me about the Window preservation Standards and the National Window Preservation Summit, I was excited to be a part of the sadly needed educational materials that we need to share with the American people misled by marketing from the window replacement companies.

Catherine Brooks here. In my past life I ran recycling programs and was a public health educator in the '70s. My MBA led me to start two small businesses. My present business is as the US distributor for a new technology for safe lead-paint removal. My education and experience in marketing led me to study historic preservation, lead paint safety, and green building technology. The WPSC project is fueling my synthesis of these interests. In our public relations work and with our customers, we frequently try to sway homeowners and contractors away from window replacement and towards window restoration. It's a tough battle without facts on our side. By actively participating as an on-site Observer in the Summit, I will be able to speak factually in the future about this topic.

My name is Kathy Morgan and I am the Historic Preservation Planner for the City of Wichita. I work with residential, commercial and institutional rehabilitation projects. I am currently involved with stained glass steel window repair at Old Mission Mausoleum and wood sash window repair at the Wichita Old City Hall. I am in the process of working with an architect to write the specs for the window repair in Old City Hall. I've had Bob Yapp come to Wichita several times for training workshops and seminars that have been well-received by our community. He will be coming back to present during our Preservation, Energy and Sustainability Fair and Summit January 25-28, 2012. This is the first time historic preservation has teamed with energy efficiency and sustainability in our state.
