It is important that our window standards are compatible with other standards used in construction and preservation, so that they can be easily used on projects that use these other standards.

We're formatting and organizing these standards to be compatible with several other standards commonly used in the field of historic preservation and general construction.

We are currently using the PDCA Craftsmanship Operating Procedure as a model for formatting each individual work-method standard, and then will organize the whole catalog of standards using CSI categories and numbers. We're using the AWI Quality Standards as a model for the types of information to include.

There is Build It Green, www.builditgreen.org, a California rating system program, are there any national energy performance or sustainability standards we should know about?

John, I liked the format of the AWI standards as they seem to have more specificity. It seems that when I quote the Sec of Interior's Standards to follow, the "recommended" and "not recommended" are too broad and I may get an okay product instead of a premium or mid-range product.

Sorry I'm getting to this so late. We have $100 M of tax credit projects going on in downtown and they all have seemed to need assistance the last several weeks.

Here's another couple sets of standards dealing with health, safety, and energy performance in buildings, both from the Building Performance Institute (BPI):

BPI Building Analyst Technical Standards

BPI and RESNET (Residential Energy Service Network) (I know less about them) are two leading building energy professional evaluator training providers.

What's of interest here for the preservation professional is that energy auditors, trained through BPI, are engaging customers in older homes throughout the country, without mention in the training about the special concerns of period home renovation. Namely, the alternatives to window replacement when the work scope seems more than just do-it-yourself weatherstripping. In my own experience, this has already lead to conflicting reccomendations, and needs much more cross discussion between professions.
