In the interest of being good stewards for all historic materials, I recommend adding a statement about the treatment of historic masonry and mortar. Not every carpenter or window craftsperson will be aware that contemporary off-the-shelf mortars cannot be used on stone or old brick, etc. This is a bigger issue than making sure that the new and old mortar colors match. The Standards can simply refer a reader to the NPS Brief, but it seems remiss to casually describe repointing. This could potentially steer a window craftsperson into unintentionally damaging historic masonry.
